The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 401

Quietly and gently today, I want to revisit the tender Still in Love. I remember being so excited about the release of this single back in February 2014 because I had just joined the fandom and I was getting to experience the release of new music from MBLAQ for the first time. True, it was not as exciting as the upcoming Broken promotions that followed, but for me it was very special in any event and I guess it kind of prepared me for the bigger stage and excitement of the group’s comeback. Plus, you have to remember, my attention by then was securely focused on G.O as I was preparing to travel to Seoul to see him for the very first time. When I listen to Still In Love, I am transported back to those early days of first discovery. Sigh….so special. Anyway, before I get too overly sentimental here (too late!), let’s travel to Osaka and a focused fan cam of G.O as the group performed this sweet ballad back on 13 March 2014. It is Fan-Camming Friday after all!

The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 397

My infatuation with G.O’s eyes continue, even if he dare only show us one. For some reason, showing only one eye during some of the Mona Lisa promotions and performances in the summer of 2011 proved to be ever mysterious and absolutely alluring, particularly at the MTV Cyworld Music Festival Dream 2011. Lucky were those who pointed their cams and cameras on him and were able to capture the attention of that one very lone soft and mesmerizing eye. I would like to ease into this Monday, this 397th day of G.O’s service, with the soft gaze of his eyes, the windows . . . or in this case, window to his soul.

The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 393

I admit to not being well-versed in Korean popular music. I further admit that my vision and hearing have been focused on and tuned into MBLAQ since I discovered who they were and what they were about. I felt then that I was experiencing the cream of the crop. That there was no need to explore further because MBLAQ, and specifically G.O, were satisfying all of my Korean music needs and yes, I was hooked. I dabbled and listened to other Korean pop groups here and there, but I always found myself returning to MBLAQ. To me they sounded different. Better. Honest. And although I love so many of their songs – so much so that it is next to impossible to choose a favorite, I have to agree that Oh Yeah,  전쟁이야 [This Is War] and Mona Lisa are perhaps some of their most iconic ~ at least in the non-ballad category of their extensive catalog. There are many performances of these three songs worthy of revisiting. For today though, I am choosing the 21 October 2012 GS & Concert performances because in addition to sounding fierce and intense, G.O’s stage presence was equally powerful and disarming.

The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 391

I know that MBLAQ’s heart-wrenching break up song 녹 [Rust] is an absolute group effort but I cannot help but single out G.O’s haunting vocals in the unplugged version that was the closing song on the group’s last recorded album as a five-man group, Winter. The level of sorrow heard in his voice is palatable. Admittedly, I could not listen to the song for a long time. I found it to be extremely telling with regard to circumstances the group was facing at the time the album was released. For me, there will always be sadness connected to Rust, but I cannot deny the absolute beauty of G.O’s voice which among the five, carries the most honesty in interpreting the heartache of a break up. I am biased indeed – but if you listen closely, you will hear it as well, and agree. In all of its sadness, it is another amazing G.O Vocal Virtuosity moment.

The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 387

It is Fan-Camming Friday and time to submerge ourselves in a moment of pure G.O joy. So I will travel back to the Men in Blaq Tour of 2011 where there was nothing but pure happiness pouring out of G.O in the energetic moments captured during One Better Day. To be at the Jamsil Arena that sweet summer evening in August 2011 must have been like soaring through the magic land of G.O charm, sweet smiles and unimaginable delight.

The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 386

Today I ask for forgiveness for just taking an easy route to admire G.O. Yes, something simple. For today, Day 386, I simply want to admire his perfect profile and quiet beauty as captured through the lens of my favorite G.O photographer, A Lucky Day.

The Soulful Countdown to G.O’s Discharge ~ Day 384

The first three months of 2012 were filled with an abundance of MBLAQ goodness. With the release of 100% Ver. and the repackaged Blaq% Ver., there was an avalanche of promotions, visuals and indeed incredible music. I have to admit that I think my little countdown will become littered (in a good way) with many Vocal Virtuosity moments going forward. And although I may have exhausted all of my available opportunities here in the first 384 days of focusing on G.O’s solo works, there is still a wealth of virtuoso moments captured in many MBLAQ songs where our main vocal’s voice is given a little more exposure. Such is the case of the lithe and charming pop love song from the Blaq% Ver. mini album, 사랑이온다/Beautiful ~ one of my all time favorites.
